Sweet and Sour Pork

A must try Chinese dish is Sweet and Sour Pork. This recipe has all of the flavour, without the extra work of battered pork.

For those special occasions you can easily batter and deep fry the pork and use the sauce from this recipe.

Sweet and Sour Pork Recipe

Ingredients

16.9 – 33.8 fl oz (500ml-1L) Vegetable oil for deep frying
1 lb (500g) Pork fillet, cut into strips or cubes

Pork Marinade
1 Tbsp. Soy sauce
1 1/2 Tbsp. Rice wine vinegar
2 Tbsp. Cold water
1 Egg white, beaten until frothy
2 Tbsp. Cornflour

Sauce
2 Tbsp. Sugar
3 Tbsp. Rice wine vinegar
2 Tbsp. Soy sauce
2 Tbsp. Tomato purée
2 Tbsp. Orange juice
2 Tbsp. Water
1 Tbsp. Cornflour
2 in (5cm) Fresh ginger, finely chopped
1 Red or Green capsicum, cut into strips
1 Carrot, julienned
4 oz (125g) Pineapple chunks

How To Make Sweet and Sour Pork

Combine the pork marination ingredients into a large mixing bowl.

Add in pork pieces, mix well and set a side for 1 hour.

In the meantime, mix all of the sauce ingredients into another bowl, apart from the water and cornflour, and set aside.

Prepare vegetables prior to any cooking.

One hour later, turn on stove at medium high heat

Pour vegetable oil into a large frying pan and fry the marinated pork in batches until golden brown, set aside.

Over high heat in a hot wok, start frying ginger until aromatic.

Add in capsicum, carrots and pineapple chunks, stir fry for a few minutes.

Return the fried pork into the wok, pour in the sauce mixture and continue to fry for another couple of minutes.

Mix the water and cornflour in a small bowl, pour the cornflour mixture into the wok and stir quickly to ensure everything is well coated.

Once fully coated, it’s now ready to serve.
