How to Make a Watermelon Margarita

This is how you make one cocktail, so adjust amounts for how many you require!

Start by making the watermelon juice, you will need a blender. Begin by roughly chopping the watermelon, about 1/2 a cup. Add watermelon along with enough ice to fill the margarita glass half way into the blender. Also add a pinch of salt and two teaspoons of simple syrup or Splenda. Begin blending, it will only take a few pulses. Once you’re happy with the consistency give it a taste and adjust the sweetness/saltiness accordingly.

Add together the tequila, water melon liquor, grand marnier and lime juice into a cocktail shaker. Then top with watermelon juice and shake vigorously, once combined pour through a strainer into a margarita glass and garnish with some mint.

Salting the rim

This is completely optional, our only recommendation is that if you salt the rim, don’t add the salt to the watermelon juice. Adding salt really helps the sweetness of the watermelon to shine through, give it a try.

Best tequila for a Watermelon Margarita

A blanco style of tequila is best suited for this recipe however, for the record we used Olmeca Altos Plata which works really well for this cocktail. In general you need a tequila that’s fresh and sweet without tasting too burnt like other tequilas that have been aged for longer. This is because you want the flavours to be more light and refreshing.

When to serve a Watermelon Margarita

This is the ultimate summertime cocktail, not only is it when watermelon is at it’s best, it’s the refreshing flavours that are perfect on a hot day.

A Watermelon Margarita is also suited for barbecues and parties since you can buy a whole watermelon and get a fair amount of juice from it, to make multiple cocktails.

Do i need to add watermelon liquor?

Watermelon liquor ensures the watermelon flavour is strong enough to taste over the other ingredients, it also adds a little extra sweetness. If you have a perfectly ripe and flavourful watermelon, then you could leave it out, but it just ensures the right taste is there.
